10U Lightning Strike Down Opponents For First Tournament Championship

The 11 girls who make up the Lake Shore 10U Lightning softball team might be playing their first year of travel softball, but they’re already making their mark on the local and regional softball scene.

The Lightning finished with wins in seven of their final 10 games to go 13-7 overall, and they nabbed a tournament championship along the way.

The team of Lexi Laumann, Brynna Taylor, Lilly McGinn, Amya Murphy, Aubrey Stevens, Sydney Aguilar, Allison Hogan, Julianna Leprohon, Brooke Medlar, Payton Martell and Riley Kellner went 4-0 at the Momma Drama tournament over Mother’s Day weekend at Cedar Lane Park in Columbia. Lake Shore outscored the opposition 40-6 in wins over the Maryland Chill, Hughesville Hustle, Hickory Lady Hornets and Arlington Sage, getting strong pitching performances from Murphy, Laumann and Martell, including a no-hitter by Murphy. In the tournament’s championship game victory over the Arlington Sage, McGinn led the offense with a two-run double that gave the Lightning a lead they never relinquished.

The Lightning are led by head coach Niki Laumann and assistant coaches Scott Taylor, Sean Martell and Justin LeProhon.

“Well-fought games full of fantastic hits, home runs and even a no-hitter [at the Momma Drama],” said coach Taylor. “This was really a team effort.”

The team also produced a strong effort at the Maryland/Delaware state championships at Bodkin Park on June 30 and July 1, winning three of its four games to finish third overall.

“We are so proud of the girls,” said Taylor. “The girls never give up, and [they] play ‘til the last out of every game.”

The Lake Shore Lightning are having tryouts for the 2019 season this summer. Anyone interested can contact Niki Laumann at nlaumann02@yahoo.com.
