An Open Letter To District 3

Councilman, District 3

Dear Citizens of District 3,

I am humbled and very honored to have been elected to serve on the Anne Arundel County Council for the next four years. It has been a dream of mine to represent this community since 2006, when I interned for Councilman Ron Dillon. Now, 12 years later, it is a dream come true to have the opportunity to sit in the same seat and advocate on behalf of the residents of District 3. Thank you for placing your faith and trust in me.

Just a little bit about my background: I grew up in Pasadena, attended Anne Arundel County Public Schools and graduated from Chesapeake High School. There, I met my high school sweetheart, Kristi, whom I married 10 years later. After high school, I attended University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and then University of Baltimore for law school. But this community has always been home; my wife and I have always known we wanted to raise our family here, and we are doing that today with our son, Luke. We have chosen to live here, like many of you, because we love the feeling of community, being close to our extended family and our lifelong friends, and the abundant access to waterways and other amenities.

In my day job, I am a litigation attorney focusing on family law in private practice. I have also assisted legislators at the county (Councilman Ron Dillon), state (Delegate Nic Kipke) and federal (Senator Ben Cardin) levels. In all of these endeavors, I have seen firsthand what makes an effective advocate and legislator: Be well-prepared. Listen more than you talk. Ask relevant questions. Do not compromise your core beliefs.

I view serving on the county council as a chance to give back and help shape the future of the community I love. I will fight to keep taxes low while supporting incremental investments in our critical infrastructure and services like public education, fire, police, roads and libraries. I will work to modernize the way county government provides services. And I want to give our county employees the tools they need to perform their jobs and serve our citizens in the best way possible.

I will also ensure that any new development improves, not detracts from, the lives of current county residents. I will not support short-sighted, irresponsible, unchecked growth in our county. Any new development must be measured, transparent and carefully considered based on intensive community outreach and input. Translation: new development projects need input from the people who will be most affected — you — before they are passed!

I plan to be a responsive representative and advocate for your needs. I will be available and in the community - I want to hear your concerns and address your problems. I will fight for this community like I fight for my clients as an attorney every day. If I can ever be of assistance to you, please do not hesitate to contact me at nathan.volke@aacounty.org.

I look forward to working together with you over the next four years and representing you on the county council. Again, thank you for your faith and trust in me.

Nathan Volke
