In May, the Northern Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce held its annual Excellence in Education Awards to honor employees from the Chesapeake, Northeast, Old Mill, Glen Burnie and North County feeder schools.

“Oftentimes, we take for granted the work that people do,” said Dr. Anthony Alston, the regional assistant superintendent for the North County and Chesapeake feeder systems, who also serves on the NAACCC board of directors. “There’s never a wrong time to say thank you and just to take the time to recognize and to say, ‘I see what you’re doing. I recognize what you’re doing.’”

It’s not only classroom teachers who are recognized but also anyone in a public school building who positively impacted the life of a child.

“These individuals don’t do these things for the recognition,” Alston said. “They do them out of the kindness of their heart because they know and believe that’s what’s best for children.”

Here are the winners from the Chesapeake and Northeast feeder schools:

Melissa Cheatwood, Bodkin Elementary School
Rachel Grula, Chesapeake Bay Middle School
Daryl Watson, Chesapeake High School
Emily Pfeifer, Fort Smallwood Elementary School
Joshua Thompson, George Fox Middle School
Beth Zimmerman, High Point Elementary School
Jennifer Yerkey, Jacobsville Elementary School
Rachel Miller, Lake Shore Elementary School
Patti Delfs, Northeast High School
Alicia Clift, Pasadena Elementary School
Susan Lewis, Riviera Beach Elementary School
Teri Abate, Solley Elementary School
Susan McDonald, Sunset Elementary School
