Athlete Spotlight: Margot Lawn, Field Hockey

Folks in Anne Arundel County and beyond are going to continue hearing the name Margot Lawn.

Lawn, a Pasadena resident and rising junior at Archbishop Spalding, added to her growing list of field hockey accomplishments this spring when she traveled with USA Field Hockey’s U17 national team to Uruguay and helped the USA to a 4-0 record.

Lawn was one of 18 girls and only two from Maryland who made the team and participated in the international tour out of an initial nationwide pool of 5,000 players that was narrowed down over six training sessions in a nine-month period.

It was Lawn’s second international trip with USA Field Hockey; she was the tournament’s leading scorer in 2017 as a member of the U17 USA Field Hockey team that traveled to Ireland and won three games.

Lawn’s international success is a complement to her success at Spalding, where she has earned two All-American team selections in addition to multiple All-Metro and All-County nods.

The University of Louisville commit started her field hockey journey in Bodkin Park playing Lake Shore Field Hockey and said the sport has become a lifelong passion.

“Every year I play field hockey, I love it more,” said Lawn. “It creates so many opportunities for me and takes me so many places. I actually have a map where I keep track of where I have played.”

Lawn said her Pasadena roots while playing for her coach and mom, Teri Lawn, helped her set a foundation for continued success.

“I am most proud of how far I have come in my field hockey career,” said Lawn. “I started out at 4 years old with my mom coaching my little sticklette team at Bodkin Park. Now 13 years later through a lot of hard work, blood, sweat, tears, and with help from my family, many past coaches, mentors and trainers, I am able to say I am a three-year outdoor national team player, have been on two international tours and have scored four goals in my international career.”

Her international career is one she plans to continue, hopefully at the highest level.

“My goals after finishing my senior year at Spalding are to continue to play high-level field hockey at the University of Louisville and to make the Olympic team,” she said. “I have had that Olympic goal since I was in fourth grade after watching the [2012] Summer Olympics. I want to attend the opening ceremonies and experience that feeling of accomplishment. I am in the pipeline for the Olympic team, but I still have a lot of work to do to make it that far.”

In the meantime, Lawn will continue her career at Spalding, where she is an AP and honors student, as well as at Lake Shore, where she is a volunteer coach for the younger teams. Being a part of a team and working hard is part of what she loves about growing and developing as a player and person.

“I love playing with friends and being on a team with a bunch of people who are willing to work just as hard as I am to win,” said Lawn. “I love doing extra training knowing that running those sprints after practice will improve my game.”
