Chesapeake Boys Top Northeast, 2-1

Jake Hynson scored a pair of first-half goals to lead Chesapeake to a 2-1 victory over Northeast in boys soccer on Thursday. Hynson’s scores were assisted by Nick Benson and Noah McHugh.

Angel Calderon scored on a penalty kick for Northeast in the second half, but Chesapeake was able to maintain its lead through the final whistle. Ethan Belcher had three saves in the first half for Chesapeake, and the Cougars’ Kyle Reider had four saves in the second half.

Northeast’s Nathan Berry made 15 saves.

The rivalry matchup was one of several strong results in the past month for the Cougars, who are 6-4-2 through October 12. Chesapeake came from a goal down to tie South River 1-1 on September 27, getting a late equalizer from Miguel Oliveria off an assist from Andrew Colebrook. Ethan Belcher had 14 saves in the draw, which was one of the strongest results of the season for the team, said senior captain Will Belcher.

“The 1-1 draw against South River was, I think, one of our best games of the year,” he said. “We played well offensively and defensively, possessed well and were really physical, and it was just a really good game.”

Ethan Belcher scored an overtime game-winner in a 1-0 victory against Southern on October 3 off an assist from Colebrook, and Colebrook scored the decisive goal in 1-0 wins over North County and Annapolis.

Aside from a 3-0 defeat to Severna Park, the Cougars have played well recently and are approaching playoff form, said head coach Drew Belcher.

“All in all, you throw [the Severna Park] game out, there’s some good results and some really good stuff,” he said. “As we build on the last three games of the year and as we move into sectionals and the state, I think these boys will be well-conditioned and prepared for the road ahead.”

Will Belcher believes the team has improved its cohesiveness from last season, and the schedule heavy with 4A opponents will serve the Cougars well against 3A playoff opposition.

“We’re very confident this year,” he said. “As a team, together we’re much stronger this year. [In the playoffs] I think we have a legitimate chance to make a statement.”
