The Chesapeake JV girls basketball team earned its ninth win of the season on February 8, defeating Northeast 37-28.
Cougars Kaitlyn Young, Darby Trout, Kirsten Toney, Ashton Stern, Sydney Reeves, Camren Quinn, Alyssa Kreuger, Maeya Devlin-Tremble, Adrienne Deprey, Michaela Dennis, Emma Crook and Kylie Capes deployed a well-rounded team effort and balanced scoring to win, as nine players scored. Kreuger and Capes led the team with 6 points apiece; Quinn and Deprey had 5 each; Young and Dennis each scored 4; Devlin-Tremble, Crook and Stern each had 2; and Trout scored 1.
Northeast’s Vanessa Tomshack led all scorers with 14 points.
Kreuger, a captain, said the Cougars regrouped after a shaky start.
“The first part of the game we weren’t doing so well. I think we underestimated them because we beat them by a lot last time,” said Kreuger. “In the second half we had to come back and be strong.”
Young, also a captain, concurred and said the team has forged a bond this season.
“When we came back after halftime we ran our offense more smoothly and had more attempts than them,” she said. “It’s like we’re a bunch of sisters, and it’s a family.”
