The Orchard Beach Improvement Association currently has plans underway for the first annual neighborhood gathering on Saturday, September 24. Currently being planned by community members Katie Thompson, Lucy Riley and Jeanne Lango, the trio has volunteered countless hours to creating the first ever event.

“My idea originated from an event I attended in my best friend’s community as a child in Bayside Beach for ‘Bayside Beach Day’,” said Thompson. “While Bayside Beach day is no longer held, I can remember a lot of the other communities such as Rivera Beach holding the same types of events. I really wish we could go back to those days again.”

The event will begin with a parade, and then will include a children’s princess and pirate pageant, talent show, art show, K-9 demonstration, corn-hole tournament, fire department demonstration, crab soup cook-off, antique car show, music, Dancers Dream performance, games, face painting, sand art, food and a beer garden.

“Nancy Shrum and Councilman Derek Fink are also to thank, as they have taken a lot of time to reach out to Orchard Beach and encourage these types of events. They truly believe in strong community ties, and that is exactly what Pasadena was built upon,” added Thompson.

Among the organizations participating at this year’s event are the Rivera Fire Volunteer Fire Department, Orchard Beach Fire Department, and Solley Elementary school. 4-H clubs, Boy Scout troops, the Anne Arundel County Police Department, Big Vanilla, Canine Corner, Summer’s Bar, Detrich's Auto Body Inc., Chesapeake Arts Center and Dancers Dreams have also been invited to participate.

The parade and games will begin at 11:00am at 1000 Hilltop Road. “Our goal for Orchard Beach Day is to bring as many people together in our surrounding community as we can. We want to set aside one day that celebrates families, organizations and local businesses still going strong because of their support for each other. That is what makes Orchard Beach unique,” stated Thompson.
