CYLA Players Honored With Christopher Schultz Award

Chesapeake Youth Lacrosse Association held its annual Christopher P. Schultz Memorial Awards ceremony and end-of-season party at the Lake Shore Athletic Complex on May 23.

The award is given in memory of Christopher Schultz, a CYLA lacrosse player who died in a car accident in 1998 at the age of 12. One player from each CYLA team receives the award in recognition of their love for life, love of lacrosse and leadership toward teammates, qualities that personified Schultz.

Recipients at the junior level (eighth grade) receive a small scholarship, and all recipients received a personalized plaque.

Paul and Kathy Schultz, Christopher’s parents, established the award and were in attendance to present the award.

Thirteen individuals received the award this year: girls players Ava Hoyer (peewee), Emersen Miller (peewee), Kaila Anstead (middie), Catherine Whipp (middie), Lily Barlieb (junior) and Phoebe Lee (junior); and boys players Griffin Couture (clinic), Jake Forman (clinic), Gannon Clark (peewee), Alex King (peewee), Daniel Munroe (middie), Jack Laib (middie) and Dylan Lewis (junior).

CYLA President Lois Warner was also in attendance to thank the many parents, coaches and volunteers whose efforts made for another successful season of CYLA lacrosse in Pasadena.

“Big thank you to our coaches and assistant coaches,” said Warner, who thanked board members/coaches/volunteers Maria Jackson, Jon Pisano, Sara Gannon, Bryan Fulton, Amanda Makarovich, Wendy Warner, Bob Widmer and Bill Spies for their efforts in creating another successful CYLA season. Warner also thanked the many parents who showed their support: “Family: It takes a lot of work raising kids. When you throw in a sport or two or three, life can feel like a ‘Mission Impossible’ movie. But [our CYLA families] did it. You do it season after season. One of the best things we can do for our children is to encourage them. Encouragement from us will keep them from giving up, will help them stay focused on their goals, will help them forgive themselves for mistakes and show them the pleasure of encouraging others.”
