D Steps Up For Chesapeake JV Football In Win Over SP

A menacing defensive effort and a pair of turnover scores propelled the Chesapeake JV football team to a gritty win over Severna Park on September 7.

Nathaniel Enoch recovered a fumble caused by Brett Jacob on the goal line to give the Cougars a touchdown in the first half, and Calvin Padden intercepted a fourth-quarter pass and returned it 39 yards for a touchdown to break a 7-7 tie and lift the Cougars to a 14-7 win.

First-year head coach Larry Waters said the difference in the game was evident throughout.

“Our defense. The whole game it was our defense,” said Waters. “They lead this team, and they were excellent today. Very proud of them.”

Enoch, playing defensive end, had a strip-sack in the fourth quarter that was ruled an incomplete pass, then disrupted the Falcons’ last-ditch effort enough to cause a fumble that was recovered by Evan Winterbottom to close the game.

“I put it all out there and just did my job,” said Enoch.

Padden acknowledged that he isn’t the fastest member of the team but took advantage of an opportunity and got a couple blocks to get into the end zone after his fourth-quarter interception.

“The quarterback just made a mistake, and it went it my favor. I saw the ball the whole way,” said Padden, laughing and adding, “I ran as fast as I could. I know it’s not very fast, but I did what I could do with it.”

Asked about the confidence level for the rest of the season, Padden said the Cougars, who beat Towson 21-20 in Week 1, have a plan.

“I’m feeling we can go 10-0,” he said.

Enoch concurred, adding, “That’s the mentality.”
