Did You Catch That? North Shore Launches Fishing Tournament

Neighbors living in North Shore on the Magothy celebrate each summer by sharing stories and racing cardboard boats in a regatta, but this summer, Jim Gregory instituted something new: a fishing tournament.

“A good friend has a similar tournament they run on the Severn River, and we wanted to do something to make more connections with neighbors,” Gregory said.

The tournament started in late May and runs through late September. Competitors measure their largest perch and their largest rockfish. The highest cumulative score in inches wins.

Gregory advertised the tournament in the North Shore neighborhood newsletter, The Barnacle, and on the community Facebook page. As of late August, about 12 people were participating, both adults and kids. Anyone can join at any time, and anglers have emailed their pictures of their fish, next to a yard stick, to Gregory.

Each week, a leaderboard has been sent to participants, along with helpful tips about bait and GPS coordinates of hot spots.

Gregory would like the fishing tournament to become an annual event, with the winner having his or her name engraved on a trophy. Fishing is an activity that he feels is great for families.

“I love being on the water and boating as a kid and even as an adult with my father, and it’s something I do now with my family,” Gregory said.
