ExpressCare Takes The Hassle Out Of Health Care

Illness and injury don’t wait until it’s a convenient time for you to visit your doctor. And when it’s not a convenient time, it’s good to know that ExpressCare Urgent Care Centers are there — even in the evening and on the weekend, with no appointment necessary.

This was one of the reasons that Dr. Maurice Reid opened his first ExpressCare location in Bel Air in 2006, and one of the reasons ExpressCare has expanded to more than 30 clinics across central Maryland, Virginia, Delaware and Pennsylvania today.

“He saw a need for additional health care in the community,” said Mel Kougle, director of marketing for ExpressCare. “ERs were getting overrun with patients and they needed some support. His vision was to go out and open up these urgent care centers. It was a good vision. He wanted to grow and open them up in different states, and that’s what he’s done.”

ExpressCare came to Severna Park in 2018, occupying a brand-new space in the recently constructed Magothy Gateway shopping center.

Open seven days a week between 8:00am and 9:00pm, ExpressCare offers urgent medical treatment for a range of ailments, flu shots, work-related injury service, lab work, X-rays and much more. Patients do not need to have an appointment, but if they want to check how busy their local center is, they can look at available time slots online before going.

What really makes ExpressCare special is the follow-up that the staff provides. “Every patient who comes in gets a follow-up call the next day to see how they’re doing and if they have any further questions or any further needs,” Kougle said. “We don’t just bring people in and send them out the door and forget they came in.”

Every year, ExpressCare takes part in a major philanthropic effort in partnership with LifeBridge Health via a scholarship program, donating $80,000 to community high schools. “[Students] do an essay on how they can improve or help make a significant difference in their community,” Kougle explained. This past spring, 31 students from across Maryland received $2,500 each and three received $1,000 in recognition of their essays.

As urgent care centers increase in popularity with patients and insurance companies, ExpressCare expects to see continued growth. Its 33rd location will open by the end of 2018, and four more locations are expected to open in 2019, two of which will be in Maryland.

“Convenience is No. 1,” Kougle said. “[ExpressCare Centers] are convenient when your regular doctor is out of town or closed on the weekend or in the evening, or you can’t get a timely appointment.”

ExpressCare is located at 153 Ritchie Highway in Severna Park and is open 8:00am-9:00pm every day. For more information, call 410-544-0571 or visit www.whywaitintheer.com.
