Early autumn brings about cool, crisp weather and those much loved fall festivities. On Saturday, September 17 Dublin Farms hosted the Pasadena Horse Appreciation Day from 11:00am to 4:00pm, an event that brought out high numbers of crowds and was chocked full of excitement. The annual event began around 11 a.m. with the set up of vendors and food. In attendance were several notable organizations that had displays and offered free literature, items for purchase and giveaways. The participating organizations were Harbor City Music Company Show Choir, Mid Atlantic Great Dane League, Coldwell Banker, Dun Pickin Farm, Cow Girl Up Pony Rides, Eagle Cove School, Angel’s Food Market, David Crockett-Farrier, Tracey’s Treasures, Coon Hound Dog Rescue of Maryland, Twin Rivers Rabbitry, Horse Industry Board, Face Painting by Shelby and Gayfield Farms. The Pasadena Horse and Pony Association (PHPA) were the directing organization of the event. At noon the commencement ceremony began with the National Anthem by the Harbor City Choir and the presentation of the flag by Joyce Cowfer.

“We came out today to help raise money and awareness about Great Danes in need of a good home,” said Christina Kallay, member of the Mid Atlantic Great Dane League. “At any one time we have between 80 to 100 Danes in foster homes.”

With Bev Varnedoe as announcing the schedule of events taking place in the riding ring, crowds enjoyed food and beverages, a moon bounce, pony rides, and a variety of animals. The crowds began to pour in during the opening ceremonies, estimating 80 people in attendance.

“We’ve never been here before but my cousin comes every year,” said Tara Hinkle, mother and local resident. “We brought the kids out here today for some family fun.”

After the opening ceremonies, crowds enjoyed several horse-friendly events such as the parade of horses, the gaited horse demonstration, western and English riding styles, western pleasure, jumping, barrel racing and pole bending. With the option of activities in the riding ring, talking to horse owners and various vendors on site, attendees enjoyed the festive atmosphere. Games and barn tours were also available for children and families.

The annual event, hosted by both the PHPA and Bev Varnedoe, was a success for the Pasadena community. With high numbers of families in attendance, the 9th Annual Horse Appreciation Day allowed community members to understand the responsibilities and therapeutic potentials of owning a horse, but it also allowed the community to honor Gail Varnedoe.Bev Varnedoe’s sister-in-law, Gail and her husband Richard owned Dublin Farm. Earlier this year, Gail lost her battle with breast cancer. As an active member of the PHPA and the Pasadena community, Gail served the community by allowing her farm to be used for club events, planned shows, trail rides and clinics.

“This is Gail’s farm, this event is to honor all she did,” said Bev Varnedoe. “She donated so much of her time and her farm. This annual event is particularly special this year because it’s also a time for us to honor her.”
