Lake Shore Girls Win Middie B County Championship

Lake Shore finished with an overall record of 11-2 en route to a county championship in the Anne Arundel Recreation and Parks Middie B Division.

The Lake Shore Middie B field hockey girls are county champions.

Cecelia Hartford scored the game-winner in a 1-0 win over GORC on October 29 that gave Lake Shore the Anne Arundel County Middie B championship at Annapolis High School. Following an 8-2 regular season, Lake Shore reeled off playoff wins over Crofton, St. Mary’s and GORC to finish 11-2 overall with a league championship.

The team of Hartford, Taylor Barchanowicz, Isabella Blickenstaff, Suzanne Brown, Stella Bumgarner, Alexis Clore, Brynn Fallin, Jasmine Fitzpatrick, Hannah Haberkorn, Addyson Kelly, Jilly Lawn, Rosie Levin, Sophie McAvoy, Kalissa Miller, Brooke Neal, Megan Preis, Carlie Ray, Emily Regiec, Shauna Snyder and Lindsey Soistman grew and progressed as they played together, said head coach Courtney McAvoy.

“It’s an amazing group of girls,” said McAvoy, who coached the team with assistant coaches Teri Lawn and Stephanie Barchanowicz. “The girls did a great job working together as a team and coming together as a team, moving the ball up the field together, as a unit. I’ve coached some of these girls since the second grade. They’ve progressed in so many ways, on and off the field. Friendships have grown and blossomed. Watching just the maturity of the friendships and their game and how important the game has become to them, it’s just amazing.”

Lawn said the team responded well to the sometimes-difficult situation of a large roster with limited playing minutes to dispense.

“They were very understanding and supportive of each other on the field,” said Lawn. “They learned that they’re just as important cheering from the sidelines as they are when they’re in the field. We told them it’s really hard, because we basically have two full teams, but they learned to support each other in other ways, and that helped them grow mentally as athletes, and that’s what they’re going to need as they move into juniors and high school. They really blossomed in their understanding that it’s more than just being on the field and hitting the ball around, but it’s about helping each other. They learned a lot about the game and about themselves.”
