Letter To The Editor: Angels Among Us

Posted

Angel’s Food Market has been a part of the Mountain Road peninsula since the 1920s. The grocery store has also been an integral part of the nearby communities since that time as well. In fact, the staff members are like family to those of us who frequent that establishment on a daily basis. They know our names and our families, and we know theirs. We talk about all sorts of things, not just business. We joke with each other, laugh at all the funny stories and also grieve when anything sad happens to any of them. Again, we’re like family.

The food they prepare every day is fantastic, plentiful and homemade. Tommy’s crab soup has won many awards over the years in the Crab Soup Cook-Off. Kim Ward, who runs the catering service, has also won top honors for her services and menus. Not only that, but Kim can put the Energizer Bunny to shame. If I had her energy, I could rule the world, but Kim, her wonderful daughters and the rest of the talented Angel’s staff are very satisfied with serving their customers, applying their cooking skills, being a part of our communities and seeing after us when we’re in need of their help.

Case in point: A few years ago, my darling wife was diagnosed with that horrendous disease, Alzheimer's. She cannot drive anymore. She cannot do most of the things that she used to do around our home as a mother, a wife and a housewife. She cannot cook anymore. On May 16, I had to go to the hospital for surgery, so I would not be able to do anything around the house for a while, and that meant cooking. I called Kim and told her of my plight and asked if there were anything she could do to help us while I recuperated. Her response to me was, “You tell me what you want and you’ll have it! Don’t you even think twice about anything! I will take care of you both!” She then asked me, “What would you and Kit like?” I made a few suggestions and that was it.

The next day, my wife and her home care companion went to Angel’s. An hour or so later, they came back with not only what was on the grocery list but also supper for the two of us from Kim and her daughters. When they named that store Angel’s, it wasn’t just for Marie Angel Durner, one of the original owners; it was for all the wonderful people who work there every day. They, my friends, are all angels!

When you get a chance, please stop in Angel’s, do your shopping, and tell the ladies and gentlemen who work there how much you appreciate them and how much you look forward to shopping there again and again. So thank you, Tommy, Walt, Kim, Jeffie, Jamie, and all the wonderful guys and girls who make Angel’s what it is today — a great place to shop, but more so, wonderful neighbors and family.
