After an early dismissal on April 8, Northeast High School staff reported to the Black Box in 15-minute integrals for seated massages.

The initiative is part of Healthy Anne Arundel Month, which is marked every April.

You’re stressed out because you’re trying to get everything finished before the end of the school year,” said NHS secretary Suzanne Sudo. “I think this is really important this time of year to keep in mind that you have to take care of yourself; otherwise, you can’t take care of anyone else.”

NHS is part of the Health and Wellness School of Distinction, according to NHS Signature Program Facilitator Brandi Dorsey, who coordinates Healthy Anne Arundel at the school.

“We are supposed to provide activities and opportunities for students, staff and community members to learn about health and wellness,” Dorsey said. “One of the things I like to do in April is put together an action calendar to make us think about different ways we can be healthy.”

This includes making a calendar of activities for the school staff: seated massages, a lesson on making healthy smoothies, yoga and more. The programs are run through NHS’ insurance provider, CareFirst, which gives back to benefit employee wellness.

“This time of year, we always say ‘take care of each other,’” Dorsey said. “It’s the push to get to summer break. It is super important that we are being active.”
