Pasadena T&F Teams Excel At Region Meet, Prep For States

Northeast had its expected corps of top finishers and Chesapeake reached new heights as both track and field teams represented Pasadena proudly at the 3A Central region meet at Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex on February 9.

The Cougar boys placed second out of 12 teams, while the girls took second overall out of 14 teams. Northeast’s girls finished third, and the Eagle boys finished ninth.

Both schools will be sending sizable contingents of athletes to the 3A/4A state meet on February 20.

Chesapeake’s day was highlighted by a handful of region champions and a slew of personal-bests across many events.

Colton Spangler had a huge day for Chesapeake, winning high jump by clearing 5’11” and anchoring the Cougars’ region-champion 4x400 meter relay team, which included Andrew Colebrook, Michael Mulford and Logan Cooper.

Kevin Vazquez was another region champ for Chesapeake, as he won pole vault by clearing 10’7”. Teammates Brendan Ansted and Kevin Johnson finished two-three to make it a clean Chesapeake sweep of points in the pole vault. Garret Bivens was fifth in the 1600. Liam Rhodes was sixth in the 3200. Austin Samuel was eighth in the 800.

The boys 4x200 relay team of Jonathan Adams, Colebrook, Cooper and Spangler placed third, and the 4x800 team of Bivens, Samuel Adams, Brennan Penafiel and Samuel also placed third.

The Chesapeake girls turned in a proud day, with many athletes advancing to states on the strength of personal-best performances. Nina Gregor placed second in the 3200. Samantha Leo was second in high jump and seventh in the 500. Maryia Hrytsyshyna was third in high jump, and Lauren Tuley was seventh. Hannah McKeon was second in pole vault, and teammates Alexis Myers and Elizabeth Beraducci were third and fourth, respectively. Kexin Wang was second in shot put, Sarah Cuttler was third and Alexis Wade was sixth.

Brooke Hurst was seventh in the 500. Jenna Sattler was seventh in the 1600. Jessica Calvert and Leah Evans were sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 3200.

The 4x400 team of Shelby Bennoit, McKeon, Leo and Bridgette Tayman placed third. The 4x800 team of Bennoit, Mason Frechtel, Evans and McKeon was third. The 4x200 team of Hurst, Leo, Bennoit and Tayman was sixth.

Northeast’s day was punctuated by the exploits of Davon Carroll, who claimed region titles in both the 55 meter dash (6.54 seconds) and 300 meter dash (35.17 seconds) in addition to fronting the Northeast’s region-champ 4x200 relay team that included Anthony Vallinotti, Demontay Snowden and Ian McCullers. Snowden was right behind Carroll in the 300, placing second, and Snowden also took second in the 500. Robert Massey placed fourth in the 3200 to qualify for states. Zach Bergeron was seventh in the 500.

The Eagles’ 4x400 team of Vallinotti, Carrol, Bergeron and Snowden placed fourth. The 4x800 team of Demetrius Jones, Daishaun Joyner, McCullers and Bergeron placed fifth.

On the girls side, Arianna Krcik qualified for states in the 500 for the first time by placing fourth, and she was also seventh in the 300. Christal Pommells was sixth in the 55 meter dash.

The 4x200 relay team of Kamryn Johnson, Krcik, Jenna Donohue and Pommells placed seventh, and the same quartet took eighth in the 4x400.
