Where To Celebrate The Moon Landing Anniversary

This Saturday is the 50th anniversary of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin taking Apollo 11 into space and becoming the first humans to step foot on the moon. If you want to learn more about the historic accomplishment or celebrate with others, here are a few places to visit:

  1. A 363-Foot Rocket Projected Onto The Washington MonumentTuesday, July 16, through Saturday, July 20

The Washington Monument will be transformed into a 363-foot rocket using projection mapping technology. While the rocket is being projected onto the monument, two nearby screens will air a 17-minute video that tells the story of the Apollo 11 mission. There will be three showings on both July 19 and July 20. The rocket will be statically projected on the monument from 9:30pm-11:30pm, July 16-18. Washington Monument. Times vary. More info.

  1. Apollo 50 FestivalThursday, July 18, through Saturday, July 20

The National Air and Space Museum and NASA will join together on the National Mall grounds for an outdoor celebration of the first moon landing. There will be hands-on exhibits and activities from a variety of exhibitors, including NASA, Boeing, LEGO and more. Speakers include ISS astronauts, authors, and NASA scientists and engineers. National Mall between 4th Street and 7th Street. Hours vary. More info.

  1. Watch Original Apollo 11 FootageFriday, July 19, and Saturday, July 20

NASA TV is airing a variety of programs about the Apollo 11 moon landing. On Friday, there will be a live celebration of the 50th anniversary, as well as a look at plans to return to the moon and visit Mars. On Saturday, NASA TV will replay the original Apollo 11 footage from July 20, 1969. Times vary. More info.

  1. The Day We Walked On The MoonSaturday, July 20

Celebrate the 50th anniversary of walking on the moon at The Colonial Players. There will be a special screening of the Smithsonian’s new documentary “The Day We Walked on the Moon.” The documentary includes interviews with Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong and more. The Colonial Players of Annapolis. 6:30pm-7:30pm. More info.
