Bruins Honor Child With Cancer

Broadneck’s football game against Old Mill last Friday was a “green-out” in honor of 10-year-old Riley Whitney, in the middle of his second battle with neuroblastoma, and his family. In honor of Whitney’s favorite color, some players wore green undershirts or green gloves, and a few had their ankles taped with green wrap. The cheer squad was decked out in green, and the coaching staff sported green T-shirts underneath their black vests. Fans wore green, and wristband sales, a portion of concession proceeds, and other donations were taken to help the Whitney family defray costs.

All of that was planned well in advance: Aaron Foote’s touchdown donation was a last-minute addition. When Foote scored his touchdown early in the fourth quarter, he made a beeline to the near sideline where Whitney sat observing the game and — with a pat of the head and a fist bump — handed him the football.

“(Ian Mauldin) and I talked about it before the game, and we thought if we could get him a ball, that would be a really cool thing,” Foote said. “This is way bigger than football; the community has our back, and we wanted to show that we have their back too.”
