Earth Day is officially observed each year on April 22, but there are plenty of local opportunities to learn about stewarding the planet well, to practice sustainability, and to care for the environment this weekend.
Sunday, April 27, 11:00am-3:00pm
For over two decades, Severna Park-based Good Neighbors Group has hosted this festival to bring together dozens of organizations, vendors, and school groups to create a fun and impactful event that challenges attendees to learn something new about the world in which they live and how to take care of it.
While enjoying music and food, festivalgoers can learn from environmental organizations, animal welfare organizations, recycling and composting exhibitors, alternative energy specialists, and physical and mental health providers.
As in years past, GNG will also host its Good Neighbors Depot, where people can recycle, upcycle and donate what they no longer need while helping the planet.
Exhibitors this year will include the Anne Arundel County Public Library, Anne Arundel County Waste Management Services, BikeAAA, Buy Nothing Project, HOPE For All, the Magothy River Association, the Severn River Association, SPAN and more. The list also includes many schools, food vendors, nonprofits and local businesses.
Entry to the event is free, and registration is not required. The Earth Day festivities will take place again this year at Earleigh Heights Volunteer Fire Company. Find a complete list of vendors and learn more about the festival at www.goodneighborsgroup.org/earth-day-festival.
Saturday, April 26, 10:00am-2:00pm
For their environmental literacy capstone project, two students at Broadneck High School – Seb Funk and Sammy Long – have organized a clothing swap to mitigate the impacts of clothing waste ending up in landfills. The event will take place in the school’s parking lot.
All are welcome to donate, swap or shop thrifted finds. Swapping is encouraged, and people can bring clothing to receive a ticket, which can be exchanged for a “new” garment. Attendees who do not bring items to swap can purchase clothes for $2 or $5. Excess clothing will be donated locally, and proceeds will benefit the environmental literacy signature grant program. Learn more on the event website.
Saturday, April 26, 9:30am-12:30pm
Join the Friends of Anne Arundel County Trails to clean up the B&A Trail on Saturday. Volunteers will meet at the Sun Station along the trail in Glen Burnie as a starting point. For more information, email friendsofaatrails@gmail.com.
Friday, April 25, 3:00pm-5:00pm
