Letter To The Editor: Pasadena Democrat Club Condemns Volke

Posted

The District 31 Democratic Club disavows, condemns and completely stands in opposition to the actions taken by County Council member Nathan Volke during the council meeting on February 1, 2021.

The District 31 Democratic Club exists in Pasadena, overlapping Mr. Volke’s councilmanic district. We represent the principles behind equity, equality, justice and science that should drive government at all levels, local, state and federal.

During the council meeting on February 1, which can be found here (www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMqLl11n0Ds), Mr. Volke:

  • In Ordinance 3-21, advocated for and voted for increased reopening guidance, despite the science indicating we are under a severe pandemic due to COVID-19

  • In Emergency Ordinance 4-21, worked for, advocated for and voted for increased reopening guidance, despite the science indicating we are under a severe pandemic due to COVID-19

  • In Resolution 5-21, advocated against and was the sole vote against, a resolution condemning the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol and calling for sanctions against former President Trump

  • In Resolutions 6-21 through 15-21, worked to divide the council and the county, as Mr. Volke worked for, advocated for and voted for increased reopening guidance, despite the science indicating we are under a severe pandemic due to COVID-19.

The District 31 Democratic Club wants to make clear, despite Mr. Volke’s claims, that he does not speak for Pasadena, and that there are those here who work for and strive for equity, equality, justice and science, as we stand with those who seek justice and work for science-based responses to the current coronavirus pandemic.

Signed,

Pamela Smelser, President

Jamie Bonenberger, Secretary

Lisa Beall, Treasurer

District 31 Democratic Club, Pasadena, MD
