Pasadena Students Head To BizTown

Pasadena Elementary fifth-graders visited the JA BizTown facility in Owings Mills on May 22. BizTown, structured like a small town, has storefronts that allowed students to occupy the roles of employee, citizen and consumer as they learned about financial education and workplace readiness.

As CEO of Continental Title Group, student Ryan D. said getting business’ bills paid was the hardest part of the job, but the experience was fun, too.

“It’s cool being the CEO because you get to run the business and be the leader,” Ryan said. “I liked filling out the paperwork and working with my team because they helped me with my work.”

Fellow student Charlotte C. was the photographer for Wells Fargo Community Center — a job made harder when people were on break or away from their offices. “I learned that people on break do not want to be bothered,” she said.

“I also learned how to use money and make deposits,” Charlotte added. “I am a spender, so I’ve already thought about all the things I wanted to purchase at JA BizTown. I want to make sure I buy insurance and snacks at the café.”

An aspiring NASA engineer, Angela P. was eager for the chance to play CFO at Northrup Grumman. “It’s fun being the CFO because you get to put in the payments and handle taxes for the business while working toward paying off our business loan,” Angela said.

Nate F., T. Rowe Price CEO for the day, enjoyed writing checks and handling the business, but he also learned tough lessons.

“I had a good experience at JA BizTown, but it was really tiring being the CEO,” Nate said. “It was more work than I thought it would be.”
