Every Fare Under The Sea Made Fresh At Anne Arundel Seafood

Shrimp, crab cakes, scallops, oysters and fish – stacked on one submarine roll. Pixie Flynn’s mother invented the famous mixed-seafood sandwich, served at Anne Arundel Seafood in Pasadena, in the mid-1960s, and the colossal sub is still a customer favorite today. At the age of 18, Flynn opened the landmark seafood house at the intersection of Mountain and Solley roads on April 1, 1973, with her brothers Butch, Dick and Bud Fifer and uncle Bud Hammond at the urging of their parents, who previously owned a crab and oyster house in downtown Baltimore.

Today, they still serve the timeless, fresh fare that comprised their menu 40 years ago: The famous fish sandwich, jumbo fried shrimp and stuffed fried hard crabs will forever be crowd pleasers. Open seven days a week for lunch, dinner and carry-out, Anne Arundel Seafood offers every crustacean, bivalve and fish under the sea – scallops, mussels, clams, oysters, a variety of fish, lobsters, crayfish and, of course, crabs are served steamed to order or freshly battered and fried.

The same selection is available at their seafood market, to be cooked to order or taken home for preparation. Flynn also highlighted all of Anne Arundel’s salads are made fresh and without preservatives, and all of their soups are homemade. In addition to eight beers on tap, they offer a full selection of domestic and premium longnecks.

“People like that they don’t have to wait for a waiter – their food is cooked immediately,” Flynn explained of the seafood outlet’s order-and-take-a-number system. “People on their lunch break can order a crab cake, eat it and be back to work again. You’re in and out.”

Easily recognized by a rooftop lighthouse and sailboat out front, the blue-roofed eatery boasts an expansive dining deck and topnotch service in addition to expediency. Two of Flynn’s tight-knit staff have worked with her since Anne Arundel opened, while several others have been there for over 25 years.

“We have such dedicated employees,” Flynn smiled, adding she and her brothers – two of whom have retired – care deeply about and work side-by-side with them every day. “We don’t do anything less than our employees – we mop the floors, we clean the bathrooms, we wait on people.”

That familial atmosphere paired with a casual setting makes Anne Arundel Seafood the perfect spot for a quick lunch, a long visit with friends and everything in between. “There will be a guy with his computer doing work next to another guy in a suit who has clients with him for a meeting, and right next to him a worker on break with muddy boots and a T-shirt,” Flynn said, emphasizing everyone feels welcomed there.

Coupled with unparalleled seafood, this environment is likely what keeps patrons returning day after week after year, and from long distances, too. “We can set our watches by our customers – we see their faces every week on the same day at the same time,” Flynn said with a laugh.

Owners of a community staple for four decades, Flynn and her brothers are always willing to help Pasadena residents in need and often donate door prizes and gift cards.
