Local Golfers Scoop County, District Honors

The Severna Park golf team has been the talk of the county circuit this season, with as much promise and as many heavy hitters as they seem to have.

Broadneck has reminded folks that they shouldn’t be slept on, either.

Both schools qualified for the state meet on October 26 and 28, and they took three of the four medalist honors in the county and district meets as well.

Severna Park successfully defended its team county championship, led by a championship-winning score of 70 posted by freshman Davis Balderstone, one shot ahead of sophomore teammate Chase Connell.

On the girls side of the county championships, Broadneck senior Caroline Viscardi claimed the individual championship on the first playoff hole over South River’s Sarah Valencia, with whom she had many battles over the course of the season.

Connell returned the favor the following week, carding at 66 to win the 4A/3A District 5 title as Severna Park finished second in the team standings to River Hill. Broadneck was third, paced by James Jonker’s 71, which was tied for third.

Both teams will send four golfers to the state semifinal round, where they will compete for team and individual honors.

Severna Park’s qualifiers were Connell, Balderston, freshman Colin Barry and junior Chris Jenkins. Broadneck is sending Jonker, senior Max Harada, junior Michael Peterson and sophomore Micah Gossard.
